I made it to LA this afternoon and got to hold my newest granddaughter. She is beautiful and oh so very tiny. She is only 3 days old, so life is a little rough still. Natalie is doing great and quite the trooper. Jeremy seems a lot more natural at this father business than Mark was with Daniel.
After the glacier day, we got up Sunday morning and got ready to leave our beloved Gstaad mountains and head back to Paris and home. We had to drive by way of Broc, Switzerland because that is where the Caillers Chocolate Company is. This was my big day. We got there and went straight for the store and skipped the tour since we did that last time we were there. I started filling up the cartons and ended up with 280.00 CHf worth of candy, about $300.00 worth. It was heavy and we divided it between our 3 suit cases and off we drove to Lausanne to turn in our rental car and get on the train to Paris.
We got lost trying to find the train station as the GPS kept taking us in circles. We got pretty frustrated but finally found it. We turned the car in, had lunch and boarded the train. We both did sudoku puzzles and read for the 4 hour ride.
When we were walking across the street to the train station, we saw a guy holding a croissant in his ear speaking French loudly as if on a cell phone. I was starring at him when I saw another guy speaking loudly into a little cardboard box with a crudely taped popsicle stick taped on the top. It was so funny. There was quite a crowd crossing the street together watching the guys coming towards them. I stood and watched them and when we were all on the sidewalk they both started laughing. Mark and I laughed and laughed. You had to be there. They were making fun of everyone talking on their cells all the time.
We got to the main Paris train station, Gar de Lion and transferred to the commuter train to the airport. It was not our favorite but it was cheap at $8 per person (better than the $150 for the van transfer at the beginning of the trip). We stayed in the Sheraton right in the airport which was wonderful. The room was large and new especially by Paris standards.
The next morning we just walked out of the lobby into the airport and after the usual hubbub, got on the plane and flew home.
Everything went well here at home while we were gone. Thanks Daniel and Shalane.
It has been a week and we are both still trying to adjust to the jet lag/time change. We wake up starving between 4-6 every morning no matter what time we go to bed. It is getting old.
We had a great trip and I loved it. I would go again in the Winter in a heartbeat.
Mark got back and the four of us left for the Glacier. I made the decision to not ski and just go along for the company and scenery.
This is Simi ready to ski. He loves his Didier Cuche/Ovalmatine helmet. He will go anywhere. We watched the World Cup races on TV that were just over the mountain from here and Simi would get so excited whenever a Swiss racer would start. He would count the time and get upset at Mark if he interrupted him or spoke at all. He knows all the racers and draws the flags of the countries they come from.
Mark, Barbara and Simi arriving at the tram a little before noon. It was already too warm, but off we go anyway just to see what skiing the glacier is all about.
All the lift houses advertise watches. It still cracks me up that we sell timing to the Swiss!
One view from the top. I went into the lodge and read a book while they all skied.
We really liked watching the para gliders taking off down the very steep mountain. They are in the middle of this picture waiting to start down. They ski for a minute and just before the rocks, they lift off and soar down the cliffs. On the way home we saw 10-15 of them flying around the mountains. It looks like a blast and I kept thinking that my boys would love to do that. I prefer to stay on the ground.
We had a nice lunch and then as we were getting back on the trams, a small storm blew in. It was truly beautiful! Barbara made us a wonderful dinner and Johny came home from his timing trip in time to eat with us. They are the best hosts!
